Colonial mythology has been implicated in the shaping of the perceptions and attitudes of both the colonizer and the colonized. Its narratives reinforce power structures that justify colonial rule, while also contributing to the marginalization of indigenous identities. Understanding the intricacies of these myths allows for a critical examination of the colonial past and its enduring effects on contemporary society, paving the way for a more nuanced dialogue about identity and cultural heritage in the postcolonial world. This chapter evaluates the influence of postcolonial myths on the construction of Igbo ethnic identity in particular and African narratives more broadly. It analyses Biafra’s self-reinvention within the body of post-war Nigerian historical and literary discourse to show evidence of postcolonial myths and how they fertilize ethnic mistrust in Nigerian multi-ethnic space.
