This chapter is devoted to the nuanced communication between intensive care doctors and other medical providers. When responding to urgent situations outside of the intensive care, the intensivist needs to pause and ‘read the room’ as they venture into the shared management of a sick or deteriorating patient. Communication style needs to be customized as the location, patient condition, and provider type that they encounter. Even managing patients within the intensive care unit, the intensivist will deal with multiple other doctors from different specialities. This chapter uses 12 quotations to reflect on these nuanced conversations.
