This chapter introduces the specialty of intensive care medicine and describes the environment of the intensive care unit (ICU). Patients who are cared for here are often the sickest of the sick, and the decisions made by the doctors who lead care can both preserve life and manage death. Increasingly intensive care doctors are also consulted outside of the ICU setting from other hospital wards seeking support in escalating the care of deteriorating patients.
