Integrating Finite Element Method and Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Structural Analysis and Conservation of the Amman Citadel

This research applies Finite Element Method (FEM) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) to perform a detailed structural assessment of the Amman Citadel that is an immensely cultural and archaeological landmark. TLS was used to produce detailed 3D models to map subtle architectural features as well as the rates of degradation with centimeter accuracy. FEM simulations based on these models revealed critical findings: allowable maximum lateral displacement of 5 mm at the wall top corners under a lateral load of 2 kPa and stressing values exceeding 8 MPa were observed on the base of the walls constructed from limestone masonry. Failure analysis performed showed that cracks start at the tensile side at the upper corners and extended downwards. From the study, the topic examines the vulnerability of the limestone structures of the Citadel to environmental and seismic related forces. Some of the suggestions are frequent reinforcements of the design, using better materials than were used previously, and incorporating the latest monitoring techniques to make the site more sustainable for the future. This work establishes the possibility of applying innovative approaches for improving the quality, speed and price in the framework of consolidating conservation of heritage structures.
