A drop weight experiment was conducted using dilatant fluid, which has the property of increasing viscosity with increasing shear rate, as a shock absorber material. In this study, water-soluble potato starch (Oobleck) was used as dilatant fluid. The results of the drop weight experiments using a dilatant fluid and natural rubber on the center of a RC beam showed that the dilatant fluid had a better buffering effect than natural rubber when the dilatant fluid could absorb the kinetic energy of the weight sufficiently while the weight was passing through the dilatant fluid. So, it was found that it is important to know in advance how much kinetic energy the dilatant fluid can absorb. A bending loading analysis of RC beams was conducted using the experimentally obtained impact forces as input data. Even if oobleck is regarded as an elastic material, the experimental results can be well reproduced when the kinetic energy of the weight is large. If the kinetic energy of the weight is small, it may be necessary to pay attention how to give the stiffness of the oobleck.
