A Systematic Framework for User Requirements in Smart Home Environment

With the rapid growth of AI and IoT technologies, Smart Home (SH) systems have emerged as a significant market trend, projected to reach $182.3 billion by 2025. However, despite their potential to enhance user experiences, SH systems face low adoption rates, primarily due to mismatches between manufacturer designs and user requirements. This study aims to address this gap by developing a systematic and comprehensive framework for SH user requirements. The framework is structured in three levels. It integrates five primary requirements—Usefulness, Ease of Use, Cost-effectiveness, Intelligence, and Well-being—which were further decomposed into 22 secondary requirements and 36 detailed descriptions. The initial framework was refined through expert reviews, resulting in improved accuracy, clarity, and content validity. The final framework provides designers with a balanced solution to enhance user satisfaction by aligning SH systems with user expectations.
