Understanding Participatory Design in Health and Wellness Technologies for Older Adults

Aging refers to the gradual biological, psychological, and social changes that occur over time as an individual age. The compounded effect of aging involves physical limitations, emotional intelligence, cognitive stimulations, health conditions and other socioeconomic factors. Older adults’ technological adoption is multifaceted, and it is essential for modern technological solutions to understand their evolving needs, digital capabilities, access and resources for a barrier-free experience with intelligent technologies. Participatory design (PD) is applied in various areas of human-computer interaction (HCI), including its use with older adults. Yet, most of PD strategies engages older adults on specific phases, missing sustained involvement, pointing to a clear need for a more cohesive and end-to-end framework. Given related stereotypes surrounding technological adoption among older adults, Participatory Design can help facilitate the development of tailored solutions while encouraging older adults embrace new technologies. The value of empowering their adoption to technological innovations can enhance their quality of life (QoL), where considerations of autonomy, safety, and usability of these solutions are both accessible and relevant to older adults. This paper investigates participatory design in bridging the gap between technology and its older users.
