A Preliminary Study on Elderly Consumers’ Preference for Robot Appearance Design

In an increasingly aging society, the demand for healthcare services among the elderly continues to grow. With the advent of the AI era, robots are expected to replace humans in performing basic repetitive tasks. Consequently, companies are anticipated to mass-produce a more diverse range of robotic forms, leading to a growing emphasis on the consumer market for robots. As the demand for robots continues to rise in the AI era, their design becomes a critical factor in the competitive consumer market. Design significantly influences consumers’ perceptions of robots, including their emotional and image-based impressions. Geometric shapes, as fundamental units of design, play a vital role. This study explores robot designs based on circular, rectangular, triangular, pentagonal, and hexagonal shapes, analyzing their aesthetic and functional impacts.The results reveal that different geometric shapes can significantly affect consumer perceptions of robots, including attributes such as friendliness, professionalism, and reliability. It is hoped that the findings of this study can serve as a valuable reference for designing robotic forms.
