Shared control is a human-machine interaction concept in which both human and machine work towards a common goal at the same time. In automated driving, it is regarded as an alternative and independent approach to traded control as described by the SAE International J3016 standard prevalent in the industrial sector. However, application of the shared control term within SAE levels currently causes confusion. This paper offers two key contributions: First, it provides a harmonized description of shared control and its relation to the SAE levels, improving clarity and accessibility of the shared control term. Second, findings from a qualitative simulator study examining the amount of longitudinal feedback as preferred by participants are presented. Results highlight the necessity for adaptive shared control approaches.
