This study uses bibliometric methods to analyse the research condition of the Human Machine Interface Design in Autonomous Vehicles (AV-HMID) field from 2015–2024. Germany had the most publications, and the University of Munich was the most productive institution. Transportation Research Part F-Traffic Psychology and Behaviour was the core journal, and Frederik Naujok from BMW Group was a representative author, yet there was limited author collaboration. Research hotspots cover human factors in automation, transition technologies, and external HMI design. The theoretical basis includes human-automation interaction theory, interaction experiment methods, and external HMI research. The research trend shifted from technology-centered to application-oriented. This research summarizes the current situation and trends of AV-HMID research, offering crucial references for future research directions and facilitating academic cooperation in this field.
