Esophageal varices are a serious complication of portal hypertension and pose a significant mortality risk in the event of variceal hemorrhage. Effective treatment exists in the form of both medication and endoscopic intervention, with changes in protocols and recommendations over recent years. The role of a nonspecialist in this setting is to know which patients to refer and when, as well as important information to include in the referral to guide an appropriate response. This chapter aims to provide guidance on how to assess patients who are at risk of esophageal varices, investigations to perform prior to referral, and who may require ongoing surveillance.
