Complaints of rectal pain with localized erythema, drainage, or tenderness should immediately warrant consideration of an anorectal abscess, defined as a collection of pus within the anorectal region. Management is focused on incision and drainage and antibiotic coverage. This chapter will cover the strategies and considerations for the appropriate management and surgical referral for the treatment of this condition, as well as caveats of care.
