Appendicitis is the leading cause of emergency surgery in adults and children. The availability of nonoperative therapy for simple, uncomplicated appendicitis does not eliminate the need for immediate surgical referral for all patients with appendicitis. The choice of therapy for appendicitis requires a shared decision-making discussion between the patient and surgeon to determine the best course of ther apy.
