Breast complaints, including but not limited to breast masses, mastalgia (breast pain), and nipple discharge, are common complaints encountered in primary care visits. While these complaints are often benign, especially in pediatric patients, there must remain a high index of suspicion when evaluating breast complaints. We seek to clarify and guide the workup of common breast complaints prior to specialty referral. We also seek to provide guidance on when referral may be indicated.
