Rectal bleeding is a common chief complaint in the primary care office and the emergency department. While most etiologies are benign and do not necessitate urgent surgical evaluation, it is important to screen for alarm symptoms, identify high-risk clinical history or features, and have increased suspicion when symptoms remain refractory to medical management.
