Understanding why people commit hate crimes remains an under-researched area. Whilst some studies have attempted to create typologies around hate perpetration, they remain binary and fail to address the complex contemporary challenges that underpin social division. This chapter seeks to argue that there are distinct causes, enablers and motivations of hate, which, when appearing together, may increase the likelihood a person will perpetrate hate. Without tackling the social triggers and structural inequalities that underpin hate, we will continue to fail to respond pre-emptively to hostility towards individuals and identities viewed as ‘other’. Thus, this chapter presents a challenge to those working in social justice to develop an effective strategy to prevent hate crime, rather than retrospectively responding following the harm caused to diverse and marginalised communities.
