In light of an energy matrix heavily reliant on fossil fuels, fuel cell technologies have garnered significant attention in academic research. These technologies are increasingly viewed as promising energy carriers for the future, especially when integrated with hydrogen-based systems and existing renewable energy sources. This article explores the potential role and application of fuel cells as a viable alternative to traditional energy models. Fuel cells offer the advantage of minimizing emissions of pollutants such as greenhouse gases, nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur oxides (SOx), thereby contributing to a reduction in environmental impact. Additionally, they can be implemented across various scales, from small to large systems, making them versatile for a wide range of sectors. One particularly noteworthy application is in electric vehicles, which offer superior energy efficiency, reduced noise pollution, and a lower environmental footprint compared to vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.
