For centuries, inscriptional and retentional methods have been devised and employed to document and disseminate the skills and knowledge acquired through the theoretical and practical experience of dance. Securing dance beyond the presence of its originary materialisation provides access to the already-there that informs individuation and collective individuation, and this demonstrated in this chapter through examples of notation practices from the Renaissance to the mid-twentieth century. In light of the present-day dissatisfaction with dance notation systems, this chapter frames the relatively recent emergence of video annotation as part of a never-ending search for suitable methods of discretising and documenting dance.
