Drawing from the philosophy of Bernard Stiegler, for whom the entanglement of experience and technology is central to what it means to be human, this chapter focuses on prosthetic memory and synthetic time. Using Yvonne Rainer’s Trio A as an anchor for contemplating technics and the ephemerality of performance, the discussion examines how exosomatisation—recording memories outside of the body—shapes our encounters with the world. Jacques Derrida’s notion of the supplement provides a framework for considering how industrial and digital media transform space and time. Robert Pfaller’s concept of interpassivity and Stiegler’s thesis on symbolic misery is used to explore the displacement or delegation of knowledge that has implications for the human capacity to reflect and play a role in the production of cultural symbols.
