Use of Stress Relief Reservoir to Improve Urine Leakage After Artificial Urinary Sphincter Implantation

Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS) has the longest efficacy record, however some patients experience leakage in situations involving physical stress, for example when coughing or lifting heavy objects. A temporary, higher system-pressure is needed in these situations. To improve the continence in these patients, a stress-relief-reservoir (SRR) can be placed in the lower abdomen in a second procedure, to supplement the occluding cuff (OC) and the pressure-regulating balloon for additional passive pressure transmission to the OC. Implantation of SRR to address urinary leakage during higher intra-abdominal pressure is minimally invasive and offers new options to improve the proven, long-term success record of AUS.
