The Moon exerts a powerful influence on Earth. Seasons and tides are shaped by its gravitational pull. But even greater than its geophysical role is the Moon’s cultural impact. It has been a significant presence in all human cultures since the beginning of time. With the rise of astronomy, the Moon became a subject of speculations about alien life. The first, and so far only, extraterrestrial body where human beings have physically set foot, the Moon occupies an oversized place in dreams of exploration and nightmares of conspiracy. There is a tradition of lunar voyages in speculative fiction, going back to the Roman writer Lucian. Moon-based novels, movies, comics, and games are a significant part of contemporary popular culture. And yet, astonishingly, there have been few academic volumes dedicated to the representation of the Moon in literature, cinema, and other media. This volume fills this lacuna. It defines the genre of Lunar Horror/Gothic as it is expressed in different forms of media, and different genres, including science fiction, fantasy, and horror, with particular attention given to non-Western texts and traditions.
