The anticipated rise in population by 2050 has been greeted by several speculations about the potential threats to food insecurity and abrupt changes in climate. Collectively, their effects are feared to culminate into a human disaster and more so, if the intermediate determinants such as soil health have not been ensured. In this chapter, the discovery of biochar and the extant uses to which it can be put to offset the challenges of food insecurity and climate change to achieve a state of balance of nature is provided. The multifarious uses of biochar in realizing sustainable development are presented while also the multi-dimensional avenues through which it can be applied are appropriated. Observably, biochar is a multi-beneficial material, the reason why this chapter also provides a precise but concise overview about modifications that have been invented to scale up the usefulness of biochar for sustainable development.
