Gamification Supports Children’s Recovery

As an innovative alternative, virtual reality (VR) is emerging as a powerful tool to reduce pain perception by serving as a distraction mechanism. Previous studies, from both theoretical and practical perspectives, have proven that VR effectively reduces pain for pediatric post-surgical recovery. However, few studies have assessed the effectiveness of various games in VR gamification for reducing post-surgical pain in children. In this study, we conducted a pilot evaluation of four types of VR-based games among eight children following surgery. The results showed that pain levels, measured by both the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Wong-Baker FACES, were most significantly reduced by action and shooter games. Adventure games showed moderate effectiveness, while RPG games resulted in the least pain reduction among all the types. Implications and limitations are discussed at the end.
