Empathy in digital games enhances player experiences by fostering deeper emotional connections. However, the lack of structured methodologies for designing empathetic characters poses challenges for game design education. In the absence of clear frameworks, character creation often relies on stereotypes, limiting emotional depth and reducing opportunities for meaningful player engagement. This research addresses these gaps through grounded theory methodology, proposing two different tools to assist designers in crafting empathetic characters: a Mad Libs-style digital tool and a Fluxus-inspired instruction-based analog approach. Building on previous research, which conceptualizes empathy as information in digital games, this research relies on selective coding to identify four core principles of empathetic character design: (a) personality, (b) life foundation, (c) path and conflict, and (d) appearance and music. These insights inform the development of the two tools. The Mad Libs-style digital tool facilitates iterative character creation through contextual feedback, making it particularly useful for novice designers. In contrast, the Fluxus-inspired approach fosters deep conceptual reflection through abstract prompts, appealing to experienced designers seeking narrative complexity. This paper examines the effectiveness of both tools in educational contexts, detailing proposed evaluation strategies to assess their impact on character design processes and player empathy.
