Investigating the Impact of Progress Feedback and Tutorials with Progressive Disclosure on Player Experience

Flow is the experience of enjoying overcoming obstacles for the sake of the enjoyment they provide, continuously adjusting performance based on feedback. Nakamura and Csikszentmihalyi suggested three conditions lead to flow: optimal challenge, clear proximal goals, and immediate progress feedback. While optimal challenge can be implemented with dynamic difficulty adjustment, there is limited empirical research testing ways of implementing clear proximal goals and immediate progress feedback. This study aims to fill that gap in the literature. Tutorial elements designed with progressive disclosure are proposed as a way to effectively implement and communicate clear proximal goals. A progress bar indicating progress towards the next level is proposed as a way to implement immediate progress feedback. A between-subjects controlled experiment with a 3 × 3 factorial design and 216 total participants is proposed to test the impact of progress feedback and tutorials with progressive disclosure on player experience. Participants will play one of nine versions of a custom research game online, and then complete the Enjoyment Questionnaire (EQ) and Sources of Enjoyment Questionnaire (SoEQ) as measures to assess player experience. It is hypothesized that progress feedback and tutorials with progressive disclosure will positively impact enjoyment, flow, and player experience.
