Amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) is a type of abbreviated EEG recording. It was originally developed as a quick bedside monitor for adult intensive care patients since it uses only 3–5 electrodes and can be placed quickly by any medical personnel. The aEEG works by detecting changes in amplitude, which then interprets the background activity and detects seizures. This device does not require an EEG technician for electrode placement, so in urgent situations, especially after typical business hours, any trained medical provider can apply the electrodes in just a few minutes. The machine is portable and stays at the patient bedside for continuous review.
