This contribution investigates specific features of the modern development of tourism and hospitality in the Russian Federation. The authors identify the main reasons that served as an impetus for the development of domestic resorts and tourism. Using specific regions of the country as an example, the authors analyze opportunities, obstacles and the necessity of the functioning of the tourism sector. In the framework of this work, statistical, descriptive, comparative, qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. The problems that hinder the development of the main tourism infrastructure, such as lack of funding, low recognition and attractiveness of territories, are highlighted, and recommendations for their elimination are given. The authors note the importance of the formation of the tourism sector as a basis for the social development of territories. The study concludes that a lot of external economic shocks are a driver of tourism development in both established and new territories. Russia should continue the process of forming new tourist attractions.
