Blood, Racism, and Misbeliefs
摘要
For centuries, blood has been used to separate, discriminate, and even cause mass assassinations in human populations. At the end of the Middle Ages, blood was explicitly believed to be a sign of the purity of a cast; the term ‘blue blood’ arises from the venous blood that could be seen in whites and not in the Moors and blacks. The nazis introduced the concept of purity of race—the ‘Aryan race’—to legitimize the reason to seize and maintain power. Blood also caused problems to those that were considered to be the champions of democracy, the Americans. Charles Drew a scientist universally recognized as the founder of the blood donation programs in the USA had to emigrate to Canada because of his African American heritage. Also the American Red Cross maintained a segregational stance concerning blood donation. In India, there persists a strong discrimination against the ‘untouchables’, difficult to understand as the Dalits are phenotypically indistinguishable from the non-Dalits or the Marajas.
