Sensory Nerve Transfers for Nerve Injuries
摘要
Reconstructive peripheral nerve surgery has largely focused on restoring motor function following nerve injuries. With improved understanding of intraneural topography and resulting advances in nerve transfers, the landscape is changing. Sensory nerve transfers serve as an intervention for patients with damage to major sensory nerves, such as those occurring in brachial plexus injuries or other peripheral nerve injuries. The chapter highlights the anatomy, clinical indications, and surgical techniques that can be employed to restore sensation in patients with peripheral nerve injuries in the upper extremity. We discuss principles of sensory nerve transfer surgery and the role of this treatment modality in relation to alternative treatment options. We also aim to underscore the challenges of sensory nerves transfers, the need for sensory reeducation to optimize clinical outcomes, and the need for more research to optimize outcomes for patients undergoing sensory nerve transfers.
