Systematic Literature Review on Sustainable and Wildfire Risk Indicators in Biomass and Residual Biomass Supply Chain Optimization

While biomass has long been a viable alternative resource for energy, the lack of harvest of woody biomass and agro-forestry residual biomass can pose an increased risk during wildfire seasons. To investigate how supply chains have been improved sustainably and whether they consider wildfire risk, a systematic review of the literature was conducted for the period 1995–2024. This paper examines the sustainability criteria using all three pillars of sustainability (also known as triple bottom line) and wildfire risk key performance indicators. A review of these indicators was studied in biomass and residual biomass supply chain optimization literature. Results of our analysis show that while most studies focus on economic and environmental criteria, few have incorporated the social criteria. Moreover, none of the studies reviewed incorporate all three sustainability criteria along with wildfire risk, highlighting a gap in the literature that needs to be addressed to promote sustainable biomass harvesting practices and reduce wildfire risk.
