In 2024, the “Catholic vote” drew a lot of attention, as it was particularly strong in many of the swing states that were to decide a very close election. Despite this, the bishops were largely absent from the candidates’ strategic calculations. The U.S. episcopate itself was rather restrained in its pronouncements, although it once again laid great emphasis on the issue of abortion as the one that should weigh most heavily in Catholic voters’ minds, despite Trump’s threats to massively deport illegal immigrants, a concern judged equally important by Pope Francis. Trump’s victory, far from settling anything, has given rise to unprecedented tensions, including some involving his Vice-President, Catholic JD Vance, but also major areas of satisfaction for the USCCB. Before studying the past election season and its consequences, this chapter presents an overview of U.S. bishops’ past involvement in presidential politics to try to evidence commonalities and changes in their approach.
