Enhancing Human Capital for Effective Telecommuting in the UAE: Insights and Strategies Post-COVID-19

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated rapid digital transformation across industries, compelling organizations to adopt telecommuting to ensure business continuity. The current chapter attempts to answer the following research questions: How has digitalization accelerated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic? What is the role of human capital development in facilitating telecommuting? What recommendations can be useful for optimizing telecommuting practices? It investigates the telecommuting landscape in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during and after the pandemic, highlighting the strategic measures adopted to enhance human capital and maintain productivity. It examines the opportunities and challenges of telecommuting, with a focus on the technological, managerial, and infrastructural adaptations that facilitated a seamless transition to remote work. By analyzing specific case studies from various sectors in the UAE, including healthcare, education, and telecommunications, this chapter elucidates the pivotal role of human capital development in sustaining telecommuting practices. The findings underscore the importance of digital competencies, employee well-being, and innovative HRM strategies in fostering a resilient and adaptable workforce, contributing to the UAE’s vision of a digitally driven, knowledge-based economy. As the UAE continues to embrace telecommuting, various challenges and long-term objectives must be considered to ensure effective telecommuting practices. Therefore, directions for future research are finally proposed.
