This chapter continues the discussion of development, studying Kamala Markandaya’s novel The Coffer Dams. The chapter reads the central plot of the construction of a giant dam as a vehicle for a fictional debate on the politics and economics of large infrastructure works, their environmental impact, and the discourse of development more generally. The chapter also examines Markandaya’s use of the middlebrow genre to give visibility to the invisible victims of development projects, thus anticipating the interests of later postcolonial ecocritics, such as Arundhati Roy and Amitav Ghosh.
