‘The Goddess Is Angry at the Dam’: Han Suyin and the Politics of Development
摘要
This chapter discusses development, Cold War geopolitics and foreign aid in The Mountain Is Young by Han Suyin. As the chapter demonstrates, Han's semi-autobiographical novel conveys her views on development, as well as her awareness of the environmental impact of Western tourism and investment. Locating the novel within the broader context of Anglo-American Cold War middlebrow fiction, the chapter also foregrounds the challenges inherent in cross-cultural encounters, thereby responding to a growing middle-class interest in exotic travel and travel fiction.
