This chapter adopts a joint sexual difference and matricentric feminist standpoint to examine in what ways Francesca Marciano’s novel Casa Rossa (2002) develops an oppositional discourse of monstrous motherhood. Arguing that the novel troubles the trope of maternal monstrosity and articulates a feminist symbolic order of (monstrous) mothers, this chapter first examines how traumatic motherhood is constructed as a transgenerational wound and legacy, which turns monstrous mothers into spectres haunting their daughters. It then explores in what ways monstrous motherhood is established upon family, cultural and societal constraints. Additionally, the chapter interrogates how, despite their inherited monstrosity, the daughters’ quest for themselves and for/through their mothers leads to the creation of empowering, truthful relationships which find expression and significance outside the symbolism of patriarchy. Finally, it engages the manifold, nuanced ways in which the symbolic order of monstrous mothers is discursively enacted as/through a narrative palimpsest.

摘要
