‘By What Right Does the Wolf Judge the Lion?’: Empathetic Televisual Moments in Game of Thrones
摘要
This chapter scrutinises the ways in which Game of Thrones (HBO, 2011–2019) both capitalises on and manipulates moments to elicit empathy and thus enhances the complexity of characterisation in the series. Through the analysis of key scenes from the narrative arc of character Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), the chapter highlights the significance of such televisual moments within long-form serial narratives to elicit empathy. As the chapter further contends, such strategically placed televisual moments are particularly crucial for eliciting empathy for characters that audiences might struggle to identify with.
