Cracked Landscapes on Beautiful Islands: How Empathy Addresses the Social Fissures in Trapped (Ófærð) and Hierro
摘要
This chapter examines how empathy is shaped and mediated through landscape in two European crime series: Iceland’s Ófærð/Trapped (RÚV, 2016–2021) and Spain’s Hierro (Movistar, 2019–2022). Despite emerging from distinct cultural and geographical contexts, both series use remote, atmospheric settings not simply as backdrops but as emotional agents that structure viewers’ engagement with character and community. By analysing how these landscapes generate affective alignments and ethical tensions, the chapter explores how television fosters empathy through audiovisual form and spatial imagination.
