Many international students often transition to the U.S. labor market after completing their Optional Practical Training program through an employer sponsored H-1B visa. However, this form of work authorization often serves as a barrier to students’ career path. Employing a narrative research approach, this study explored how four undergraduate international students navigated the various challenges that they encountered, while seeking post-graduation employment within the U.S. labor market. Findings from this study revealed the strategies that undergraduate international students used to overcome these barriers, including engaging in self-advocacy, leveraging available resources, exploring other opportunities, and redefining success in order to take control of their post-graduation journey. This study advances understanding around the strategies and tools that international students can leverage to empower themselves, as they take the next step in their career.
