This chapter explores how democratic dissatisfaction and varying views of democracy influence voting behavior in France. Leveraging European Social Survey data, it posits that perceived democratic deficits impact electoral choices beyond mere dissatisfaction. Findings show that those perceiving deficits in liberal democracy lean towards abstention or left-wing parties, while perceived deficits in popular sovereignty predict support for populist parties or abstention. Additionally, a deficit in social democracy appears to mobilize left-leaning voters. The chapter highlights that conceptualizations of democracy directly shape protest voting and abstention patterns, challenging instrumental perspectives on democratic dissatisfaction and its electoral impact.
