Astronomers have observed total solar eclipses from the Earth surface since centuries, to understand the nature of the corona, as Thomas Edison did in 1878. A great progress was achieved in the 1950s, when the brightest parts of the corona could be observed outside eclipses, with an instrument named coronograph. In addition, better observing conditions, especially for detecting the infrared radiation of celestial objects, including the corona, could be found higher in the Earth atmosphere, which led to the use of stratospheric balloons and aircrafts, properly equipped with telescopes.
