The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector contributes to the global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) mainly through its electric energy consumption. This consumption is predicted to increase significantly by 2030, with data centers being one of the largest energy consumers. Data centers are not the root cause of the high energy consumption; they are the visible part; the main drivers are the executed software and built IT infrastructures. However, current solutions address only parts of this problem by proposing solutions for efficient green routing, green schedulers, renewable energy sources, and determining the environmental impact of single applications. Therefore, we envision the development of the Green Infrastructure Evaluation, Optimization, and Alignment System (GIEOAS) that will transform existing IT infrastructures into energy-efficient systems. GIEOAS will achieve this by evaluating existing IT infrastructures against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and patterns while allowing users to define custom KPIs and patterns using a Domain-Specific Language (DSL). In addition, it will propose optimized infrastructure designs that meet the specified objectives. Finally, GIEOAS aspires to automatically align the current IT infrastructure with the optimized design by generating Infrastructureas-Code (IaC) to achieve energy reduction. For now, our primary objective is to lay the basis for GIEOAS by defining five problem statements and presenting our envisioned solutions for each. The overarching goal of GIEOAS is to reduce the energy consumption of the ICT sector.
