Industrial sectors globally are pushed to decarbonize their activity. Yet, they are split between economic growth imperatives and climate crisis mitigation. Techno-solutionism, from the implementation of large-scale green energy parks to climate geoengineering, is the driving force behind the zero-carbon industrial revolution. In this situation, Morocco’s long-term push for a green transition stands out as an interesting example of how renewable energy sources, especially solar power, can be used to change industrial activity while opening up new social and economic growth paths that rethink how industrial activity can stay productive with little to no CO2 emissions. This paper aims to provide an overview of the complexities inherent in navigating the economy-environment nexus. It highlights how Morocco’s industry and energy policy agendas are capitalizing on the opportunities for green growth and technological innovation. It also gives a different view of the rapid growth of industrialization after oil, and it challenges the usual growth-centered models that make it hard to create post-extractivist futures.
