Climate Change versus Current Building Practices: Assessment of the Transformation of Vernacular Architecture of the Sundarbans Delta Region in Bangladesh

The Sundarbans Delta is a vast mangrove forest consisting of the lower part of the Ganga–Brahmaputra Delta which covers most of Bangladesh and West Bengal (India). This mangrove-covered coastal area has a significant historical record of human habitation spanning several centuries because of its abundant natural resources and biodiversity which, in turn, has given rise to a distinct vernacular architecture. Vernacular architecture is intentionally crafted to accommodate a particular region's specific climatic conditions and cultural context. Due to rapid urbanization and climate change, traditional architectural practices are at stake. Considering the imminent danger of climate change as a worldwide issue, it is crucial to understand the impacts of these climatic changes on the traditional building techniques and construction materials of the Sundarbans region to ensure resilience. Cyclones, tidal surges, rising sea levels, and coastal flooding have increased in frequency in the last two decades, yielding to the vulnerable living conditions of this area. To seek permanence and reduce the extent of vulnerability, the local population has started following up-to-date practices for dwelling unit construction. In fact, several shelter programs initiated by the government and non-government organizations (NGOs) in response to disasters and forest preservation emphasize modern practices in this disaster-prone region as a quick response and influenced by efficient labor force availability, mass production of construction materials, and cost-effective execution, without even considering traditional vernacular techniques. This study aims to analyze the dichotomy between climate change's influence on the Sundarbans Delta's conventional architecture and the trend of adopting new approaches to mitigate climatic hazards. A comprehensive documentation of the Sundarbans delta region's distinctive architectural alterations has been presented, contributing to its cultural identity and resistance against environmental forces. This has further unveiled the scope of incorporating traditional methods with contemporary practices to mediate ecological and climatic degradation.
