We present the results of a comprehensive analysis of long-term spectroscopic data sets on the CO total column (CO TC) at stations of the A.M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences (OIAP RAS) in Moscow and Moscow province. The aim of the work was to continue our research on long-term trends in CO TC in the Moscow megalopolis and its surroundings and their interrelations with meteorological conditions. One of our objectives was to study the contribution of meteorological factors to the improvement of air quality in Moscow. The long-term variability of CO content and meteorological parameters in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) was studied. A decrease of CO TC in the period 2000–2023 was established for Moscow, (− 2.2 ± 0.4% yr−1) and for Zvenigorod Scientific Station ZSS, − 1.1 ± 0.3% yr−1. The rate of decrease in both sites is different in different seasons and time periods. After about 2007, the rate of CO TC reduction decreased at both sites. In the period 2009–2023 at the ZSS, the statistically insignificant increase of CO TC was recorded in the summer and autumn months. A decrease in the wind speed in the ABL of Moscow in different periods of 2003−2020 was found at the rate of 0.7–1.3% yr−1. At the same time, no statistically significant changes in wind speed were found in the Kaluga region. Characteristics of CO trends in both sites in different seasons and periods are presented and discussed. The decrease in urban CO TC and concentration is primarily due to the reduction in anthropogenic emissions; however, the additional possible reason for the improvement in urban air quality could be the impact of some climatic factors, such as spatial changes in the urban “heat island” and its intensity and related factors leading to the intensification of turbulent processes in the ABL.
