Leveraging Urban Air Mobility (UAM) for Sustainable Urban Development: A Comprehensive Analysis of Impact and Congestion Mitigation

Since the 1920s, in response to the challenge of mediating between excessive cars and inadequate infrastructure, urban spaces have been transformed to accommodate transportation needs while also providing areas for residents’ activities. However, this has led to congestion issues that need to be addressed, along with associated problems such as air pollution, high noise levels, and increasing greenhouse gas emissions that negatively impact quality of life. Simply expanding and densifying urban networks is not a long-term solution; alternative transportation tools must be explored. As experiments have shown that relying solely on one transportation plan is unfeasible, exploring transportation options across different layers presents an alternative solution—urban air mobility (UAM). Urban air mobility offers a promising approach by utilizing small and highly automated aircraft at lower altitudes in urban and suburban areas for efficient and environmentally friendly passenger and cargo transport. This article aims to introduce the strategy of developing UAM in cities not only to alleviate congestion but also to mitigate its side effects. The focus of this paper is on analyzing the benefits brought about by integrating UAM into existing transit systems through data analysis.
