The volume details the history of Greece’s dependence on trade and financial links to Europe’s markets both in the nineteenth century and more recently to the European Union, and the many challenges and benefits economic dependence entailed over the years. It argues that Greece had no reasonable options except to depend on these links for its sustainable economic development. It also explores history’s lessons on the appropriate policies that would have permitted Greece to maximize the gains from this dependence for the growth of its economy and the welfare of its people. This chapter discusses the concept of economic dependence and describes the content of the chapters that follow.
