Many classic approaches to automated question generation have utilized templates in some form. The use of templates for AQG is not a single methodology, but rather a rich set of various approaches. It is sometimes listed as syntax driven, or rule-based, but such labels are not entirely correct. The template-based AQG approach flourished in the research literature from around 2006–2018, and often used rule-based and syntax-based components, such as sentence-structure parsers and SRL parsers.
