We present the classic approaches to automatic question generation from text in two parts. This chapter covers approaches that are based on linguistic analysis of text units. Template-based approaches are presented in the next chapter. While they are presented separately, those approaches do share some features, and some methods involve both templates and linguistic analytic components.
