The purpose of this study is to understand teacher leadership competency development in the Canadian teacher education system. Using a content analysis method, this study identified that leadership learning for teacher leadership competency development is not the focus of the current pre-service teacher programmes in Canada, although some transferable skills are covered in pre-service teacher programmes. In view of foreseen challenges in Canadian and international society, new directions for the development of teacher leadership competency through the Canadian teacher education system are discussed.
