The Ambulation is the third and final chapter and is based on the notion that “art represents the incessant refusal to conclude”; it is a progressive dialogue that interacts with the work of William Kentridge, which moves within transitional, transnational and translational spaces. The chapter primarily investigates the materiality and conceptual structure of Kentridge’s mosaic Ferrovia Centrale per la città di Napoli, 1906 (Naples Procession) /Central Railway for the city of Naples, 1906 (Naples Procession), 2012, an installation piece situated in a subway station that is itself overlayered with multiple temporalities, invoking pasts and presents, and calling upon references that are at once personal, local and global. Complementing the ambulatory process that marks much of Kentridge’s work, this chapter explores the movement of Naples’ representation within the metro’s urban space.
